Just Acts: We Can Restore Voting Rights of 1.4 Million People in Florida—Join Us August 6th for National Phone Banking
Dear ,

Amidst all the truly horrifying news that is coming at us on a daily basis, there are some strategic bright spots that we need to get behind and support mightily.

One of those is the Voting Restoration Amendment in Florida. Organizers, including our UU Justice Florida state network, succeeded in gathering 1 million signatures to get this amendment on to this year’s November ballot to re-enfranchise people with felony convictions! We are talking about 1.4 million Floridians who are currently BARRED FOR LIFE from voting because they have a felony conviction who with the passage of the Voting Restoration Amendment (Amendment 4) will be eligible to vote.

Will you help support your fellow UUs in Florida who are working hard to get this amendment passed along with their partners in the Second Chances Coalition? The UUA has joined the Coalition and together we are asking that you:

Join us on Monday, August 6th--the 53rd anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act-- for a national day of action to engage, 1 on 1, with Florida voters to educate them on the issue and make sure that they vote Yes 4 Second Chances this fall by voting Yes on Amendment 4.

Please sign up here for a phone banking shift on Monday, August 6th.

The passage of Amendment 4 would lead to the most significant expansion of voting rights since 1965. As Florida is a stronghold in denying the right to vote, a win there sets the stage for civil rights wins in states across the country.

This movement was initiated and is led by formerly incarcerated people who are organized through the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and who built the broader Second Chances Coalition for this campaign. Our commitment as Unitarian Universalists to ending mass incarceration, to dismantling white supremacy, and to building democracy are all encompassed in this movement.

Lots of Call Team volunteers are needed to help us fill phone banking shifts so please spread the word and recruit others from your congregations, organizations, and networks. The phone banks can be done entirely from home, from anywhere in the country. It’s easy to get involved, and the coalition will give you all of the training and resources you need once you’ve signed up. You’ll be asked to watch a 15 minute video, read the call script, and join a debrief call after your shift. It is also fun to get together for phone banking parties at people’s homes and at your congregations.

Please sign up here for a phone banking shift on Monday, August 6th.

In difficult and dangerous times, the spiritual antidote to discouragement and despair is engagement. And the strategic antidote to assaults on our people is to support those most impacted in their efforts to dismantle systemic oppression and build their own power. The Second Chances Amendment does all that. Let’s help them get a win in Florida!
Faithfully,
Susan
