Just Acts: Love Resists! June 30th Join Families Belong Together Actions in DC & Around the Country

Dear ,

We are witnessing a time of expanding attacks on our communities that require vigilance and growing resistance—a time when we are each called to raise our voices and do everything we possibly can to resist.

As you know, on Tuesday the Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration’s white supremacist agenda as it upheld the Muslim Ban. And the criminalization of immigrants by the Trump administration has reached new depths with the separation of children from their parents at the border and the creation of internment camps on military bases for migrant families. There are now over 3,000 children being held. This is a humanitarian crisis that must be stopped. Jeff Sessions' zero tolerance policy is one that we must have zero tolerance for. These attacks on migrants and refugees are the real crime! To be silent now would be to be complicit with an escalation of a white supremacist and authoritarian regime that is being spearheaded by the Justice Department using ICE as a paramilitary force in cooperation with the US military. At our General Assembly in Kansas City, delegates voted to End Family Separation and Detention of Asylum Seekers and Abolish ICE. As people of faith and conscience we must raise our voices and we must act.

On June 30th the broad Families Belong Together Coalition will be protesting at the White House in Lafayette Square at 11 am and then we will march to and surround the Justice Department to demand an end to family separation and detention , the defunding of ICE and the Border Patrol, and to demonstrate our outrage. This administration must be held accountable for the trauma it is inflicting on our communities. There are also events all around the country--over 600 and counting. You can find an event near you.

The UUA and UUSC are partnering with the Families Belong Together coalition. UUSJ is coordinating a meet up point for UUs at 10am on June 30th - check here for details and to RSVP. (UUs will gather at Farragut Square near the intersection of 17th St and I St. 17th runs on both sides of Farragut Sq. Coming out of RED line Farragut North metro station, take the south exit and cross the square along 17th. Coming out of the ORANGE/BLUE lines, Farragut West metro station, take the west exit and cross the street to the square.)

Please join me and the Rev. Michael Crumpler, UUA LGBTQ and Intercultural Programs Manager and Rev. Megan Foley, Regional Lead for the UUA's Central East Region, at the UU Contingent of the Washington, DC rally and march. Members of UUSC staff will also be part of the UU contingent. Rev. Jeanne Pupke, Senior Minister of First Unitarian Universalist Richmond, VA, will gather us in and lead us in prayer.

If you can come to Washington, DC be prepared for 90 degree weather. Wear good walking shoes, bring lots of water in your backpacks, along with snacks, and sunblock if you need it.

Please also support our partners at Mijente who will be taking to the streets on July 5th in San Diego to oppose the inauguration of Operation Streamline, a joint initiative of the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice that adopts a "zero-tolerance" approach to unauthorized border-crossing by engaging in criminal prosecution of those engaging in it. Mijente needs funds, assistance, legal support and people experienced in direct action.

We hope you can join us in either Washington, DC or at local events and in San Diego. Love Resists!
In solidarity,

Susan Leslie
